Mapari Wilderness Camp

“An Inviting Escape”

Where is it?

The Mapari Wilderness Camp is located within the Kanuku Mountain range which lies in the southern half of Guyana, dividing the Rupununi into northern and southern savannas. The Rupununi River rises in the deep south and flows north, bisecting the mountains into eastern and western ranges. The wilderness camp is located 35 miles upriver from the Caiman House Eco Lodge in Yupukari Village.

Why should I visit?

It’s rich, it’s pristine, it’s remote.

The Kanuku Mountains, blanketed in tropical rainforest, are internationally recognized for their rich biodiversity. In 2011, the Kanukus were declared a protected area.  At 611,000 hectares, the Kanukus are the largest protected area in the country.

Mapari Wilderness Camp, overlooking a clear water creek, is not your typical lodge, its a remote and rarely visited place where wildlife present themselves around every turn. The hammock camp overlooks a small waterfall and a natural bathing pool. Take a short stroll to a harpy eagle nest, enjoy forest hikes, see and photograph a Goliath bird eating spider, and partake in spotlighting river drifts at night.

The appeal of the Amazon is the same appeal any great wilderness has. If you have a passion for birdwatching, wildlife photography, remote landscapes, unspoiled rain forests and rivers, and you love wildlife and wild places, Mapari Wilderness Camp is the perfect retreat.

Our guides, all English speaking residents of local indigenous communities, will share their stories of the forest, its people, and its wildlife. Our wish is for you to go home with a greater connection to nature, for us to remember you as friends, your trip with fondness and to have a sense of satisfaction in having shown you a piece of an extraordinary part of the world. If you love to learn, explore, and have transformative experiences to create memories you will keep forever- come join us.

The Mapari Wilderness Camp is a joint partnership between Ashley Holland and the local indigenous community that owns the land. This partnership and your visit directly help to sustain and protect this environment by creating conservation-based training and employment for locals.

Who are we?

Mapari Wilderness Camp was built and founded by Ashley Holland, owner of Guyana Truly Wild which specializes in river and camping expeditions into the heart of Guyana’s wilderness. With 20 years of experience running tours and expeditions to the Kanuku Mountains and other areas in Guyana, Ashley has hosted and guided many guests in the past including BBC film crews, researchers, professional photographers, wildlife/nature enthusiasts, and eco tourists. We invite you as our guest to show you the wilderness in its raw form- no roads, no lodges, no other tourists, just us, the river, the forest, and its wildlife.
